What Is Form 4868?

Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, gives individual taxpayers 6 more months to file their federal income tax return. The extension is automatic, so you do not need to explain to the IRS why you need more time. It covers Forms 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR, 1040-PR, and 1040-SS, and certain Forms 1040-NR-EZ filed for prior tax years. The extension covers the time to file only. Tax owed is still due by the original filing deadline.

Who Must File Form 4868?

Eligible individuals who cannot complete their federal income tax return by the regular due date can file Form 4868. This includes U.S. citizens, resident aliens, and certain nonresident aliens. Taxpayers who make an electronic payment and designate it as an extension payment do not need to file Form 4868 separately. The IRS processes the extension automatically when the electronic payment is made.

What Must Be Reported on Form 4868?

Form 4868 asks for 2 types of information. First, your name, address, and Social Security number. Second, 4 tax figures:

  • Estimated total tax liability for the year
  • Total payments already made through withholding, estimated tax payments, and refundable credits
  • Balance due after subtracting total payments from the total tax liability
  • Amount you’re paying with Form 4868

What's New in Form 4868 for the 2026 Tax Year?

For TY 2026, 2 changes affect how individual filers use Form 4868.

Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), enacted July 4, 2025, new deductions under Schedule 1-A apply for tax years 2025 through 2028. These deductions may reduce taxable income, so eligible filers should factor them into their Line 4 tax estimate. The minimum late-filing penalty also increased to $525 for returns required to be filed in 2026 and later, including TY 2025 and TY 2026 individual returns filed during those periods.

Form 4868 Filing Requirements

To qualify for an automatic extension, you'll generally need to meet these requirements.

  • File Form 4868 by the original due date of your return.
  • Estimate your total tax liability as accurately as possible and enter it on Line 4. Form 4868 must show a properly estimated tax liability based on available information.
  • Pay as much of your total tax liability as possible by the original due date through withholding, estimated payments, or a payment made with Form 4868. To avoid the late-payment penalty during the extension period, generally at least 90% of your total tax liability must be paid by the original due date, and the remaining balance must be paid with your return.
  • If you are outside the U.S. on the original due date, you may already qualify for an automatic 2-month extension. Form 4868 can provide an additional 4 months if you need more time beyond that.

Form 4868: Frequently Asked Questions

No. Any eligible individual who needs more time to file an eligible income tax return can request an extension. There is no income or dollar threshold. The form is available to all individual filers regardless of how much they owe.

No. Form 4868 extends only the time to file. Any tax owed is still due by the original filing deadline. Interest accrues on unpaid tax from that date, and a late-payment penalty may also apply if you do not pay at least 90% of your total tax liability by the original due date.

A timely filed Form 4868 generally gives individual filers an automatic 6-month extension to file their return.

If you miss the extension deadline and your return is also filed late, the IRS may assess a late-filing penalty of 5% of unpaid tax per month, up to 25%. For returns required to be filed in 2026, the minimum late-filing penalty is the lesser of $525 or 100% of the tax required to be shown on the return.
