What Is Form 943?

Form 943, Employer's Annual Federal Tax Return for Agricultural Employees, is the IRS form that agricultural employers file to report wages paid to farmworkers and the related federal payroll taxes.

It covers federal income tax withholding, Social Security tax, and Medicare tax for the full calendar year.

Who Must File Form 943?

You must file Form 943 if you paid wages to farmworkers and meet either of the IRS tests: you paid an employee $150 or more in cash wages for agricultural labor during the year, or your total cash wages to all farmworkers reached $2,500 or more.

Once you file your first Form 943, the IRS requires you to keep filing each year until you submit a final return, even in years with no taxes to report.

What Must Be Reported on Form 943?

Form 943 reports the following for the calendar year:

  • Wages paid to agricultural employees
  • Federal income tax withheld
  • Taxable Social Security wages
  • Taxable Medicare wages
  • Employer and employee shares of Social Security and Medicare tax
  • Adjustments and the qualified small business payroll tax credit for increasing research activities, if applicable
  • Tax deposits made during the year
  • Balance due or overpayment

What's New in Form 943 for the 2026 Tax Year?

The 2026 Social Security wage base rises to $184,500, with the rate unchanged at 6.2% each for employer and employee.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act introduced a deduction for qualified overtime compensation for tax years beginning after 2024 and ending before 2029. Employers don't change withholding on their own; they apply it only after an employee submits an updated Form W-4.

Overtime remains subject to Social Security and Medicare tax. Form 943-X can also now be eFiled through Modernized eFile (MeF).

Form 943 Filing Requirements

File Form 943 once a year for all wages paid to agricultural employees that meet either of the IRS tests. A few requirements to keep in mind:

Deposits must be electronic

All federal employment tax deposits must be made electronically through EFTPS.

Your deposit schedule depends on your lookback period

For 2026, the lookback period is 2024. If you reported $50,000 or less in Form 943 tax, you're a monthly schedule depositor; above $50,000, you're a semiweekly schedule depositor.

The $100,000 next-day deposit rule applies

If you accumulate $100,000 or more of liability in any deposit period, deposit by the next business day, regardless of your normal schedule.

Form 943 can be eFiled

Form 943-X corrections can also be eFiled through MeF.

Keep your records

Retain payroll, tax deposit, and agricultural wage records to support the amounts reported.

Form 943 Due Dates for the 2026 Tax Year

For wages paid in 2026, Form 943 is generally due by February 1, 2027. The standard deadline is January 31, but since it falls on a Sunday in 2027, it automatically shifts to the next business day. This timing rule applies broadly, if any IRS due date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, it moves forward to the next business day.

Condition Filing Deadline Explanation
Standard deadline (all filers) February 1, 2027 January 31 falls on a Sunday, so the due date shifts to the next business day.

This additional time is not based on paying your taxes when filing. Instead, it depends entirely on whether you deposited all employment taxes correctly and on time (via EFTPS) during the year. If any deposit was late or missed, the extension does not apply, and the February 1, 2027 deadline remains in effect.
